Keyword Research Tool Recommendations For Better SEO Ranking

digitalpostz keyword reseach

During my SEO training, I am often asked which tools are recommended for keyword research. Unfortunately, I cannot answer the question in general, because each keyword research tool has its advantages and disadvantages and keyword tools differ fundamentally in their database and the KPIs used. In this article, I will introduce you to popular keyword tools with their advantages and disadvantages – decide for yourself.

Why do you require a keyword research tool?

Search engine provider Google has been shifting its search algorithms towards signals that are difficult to manipulate for years and is placing increasing demands on the content and degree of information in content – especially for informational searches.

Positive user signals have an advantageous effect. However, it is not known which user signals Google rates and what their individual significance is. However, since March 2016 we have known that content is one of the most important Google ranking factors. So if you want to be found well in search engines, you have to produce high-quality content that convinces. If you copy content from other sites, you won’t get very far. To be successful, you have to invest a lot of time and offer new perspectives, current and more in-depth information, etc. A keyword research tool for a search term analysis is worth its weight in gold.

Who does a keyword research tool help?

Anyone who wants to publish serious content on the Internet and wants to be found in search engines needs a keyword tool to pinpoint the thematic focus or its limits for content production. After all, it is necessary to know which terms and phrases search engine users enter before content production when they search for information on the respective topic on Google & Co. Because with these search terms you should be found well.

What is the privilege of a keyword research tool?

A keyword tool serves as a source of information and as a decision-making aid for content production. If you want to create content for an online shop, a corporate website, a blog or an online magazine, the first question is about the topic. If the topic is known and the new page is to generate traffic through search engines, you should align the content for terms that have an adequate search volume (traffic) and for which the page also has a realistic chance of being found well. The Keyword Research Tool supports the user to find the right main keyword and other suitable keywords for his needs or to create a keyword set to develop a complex world of topics.

Google Keyword Planner

As of today, the Google Keyword Planner only shows search volume estimates from. This inaccurate data is not helpful for in-depth keyword research. Google apparently wants to force Google AdWords ads to work so that you can work with real search query values. From an SEO perspective, it remains to be seen whether Google will expand the search query reports in the Search Console and provide us with better data there.

The most popular keyword tool is the Google Keyword Planner – a helpful, free tool to find keywords for Google AdWords campaigns and ads on the Google search network. You can create keyword lists and import them directly into a Google AdWords account. You can also upload your own keyword lists to enrich them with Google data or you can perform performance forecasts for clicks and costs. This already shows the problem of the Google Keyword Planner: It is a tool for Google AdWords advertisers. Because search volumes of keywords also contain SEA traffic and this distorts the informative value for SEO keyword analyzes. In addition, search volumes of similar keyword variants (such as singular/plural) of keywords are summed up. Anyone who uses the Google Keyword Planner for SEO analyzes should handle the traffic data carefully.

The most popular query in the Keyword Planner for SEOs is to use a phrase to search for new keywords. Here you enter a list of relevant keywords, select country and language and can optionally set keyword filters.

In summary, it can be said that the Google Keyword Planner is of limited use for finding new keywords. One should not place particular emphasis on the search volumes and instead export the keyword ideas, sort and filter them via Excel and use them as a database for importing for other tools. These can be used to query and evaluate more meaningful KPIs. use to Link to the Google Keyword Planner.

Google Suggest

Strictly speaking, Google Suggest is not a keyword research tool, but Google Search offers interesting keyword suggestions for more precise search queries. Usage is extremely simple: You switch to the desired Google Index and start entering a keyword there. Google then suggests interesting additions in the search slot that are based on real search entries. With Google Suggest, you can quickly and easily get interesting insights, which search engine users often enter in the search slot.

Google Trends

Google Trends is a free service that suggests exciting current search trends and can be used to query keyword search trends for your own analyzes. The search trend is displayed using a diagram. If more than two keywords are queried at the same time, they are scaled in a diagram. Google optionally adds pins to historical events in the graphs, which may have had a significant impact on search trends. The data is processed according to:

  • Interest over time
  • Regional interest
  • Related searches

Google Trends offers a variety of filter functions to individually restrict search trends, such as:

  • Worldwide or selected country
  • Period
  • Categories
  • Search (web search, image search, news search, Google Shopping, YouTube search)

KWFinder

 Free / Rights

KWFinder is one of my favourites for keyword research. It simply works: You enter a keyword, choose a country or city and optionally a language and click on “Search”. In no time you get keyword ideas that are supplemented with SEO-relevant KPIs. I present the KWFinder in detail here: KWFinder for keyword research.

Moz Pro Keyword Explorer

What did the Moz Wizzard do again? The Moz Pro Keyword Explorer is one of my favourites for keyword research. Admittedly, the Moz toolset is very US-heavy but worth a test. Users without a Moz Pro license can do two keyword queries a day. It is very easy to use: enter the keyword in the search slot, select the search index and click on the magnifying glass.

The Moz Keyword Explorer initially provides information on the entered search term: volume, difficulty, opportunity, potential. The Keyword Tool also provides Keyword Suggestions, SERP Analysis and Mentions. If you like the Moz Pro Keyword Explorer, you can test the entire Moz Pro toolset for 30 days free of charge. From just $ 50 / month you can use the Moz Keyword Explorer in the Pro version.

The overview (or dashboard) provides the user with an overview of important decision criteria. Here you basically make the decision whether the keyword is relevant and you get an impression of the Keyword suggestions (Suggestions):

In the Keyword Suggestions Report, keywords are displayed in descending order of relevance. You can also find out how often the term/phrase is apparently searched for on Google (volume). If you want to narrow down / adapt the suggestions, this is done using three filter options that can be set via the suggestions. For further use you can export selected or all keywords via CSV:

I think the next feature is awesome. The SERP Analysis report lists the first ten hits in the desired Google index and feeds them with SEO-relevant KPIs such as Page Authority, Domain Authority, Linking RDs To Page, Linking RDs To Root Domain, Facebook Shares. Using this data, Moz experienced users can derive the keyword difficulty:

Übersuggest

Übersuggest is an exciting keyword research tool because it suggests a variety of keyword ideas based on a search term. The provider himself says about his tool:

Use Übersuggest to quickly find new keywords not available in the Google Keyword Planner. Get your keyword research to the next level with so many keyword thoughts for SEO, PPC, and your next content marketing campaign.

The tool works like this: You enter a keyword and then choose whether you want ideas for web, images, shopping, YouTube or news and for which country/language the keyword ideas should be output. By clicking on “Suggest” Übersuggest starts the search and after a few seconds delivers a wealth of keywords that are sorted alphabetically and numerically. However, Übersuggest does not provide any key figures such as search volume, CPC or relevant SEO metrics. Nevertheless, it is a helpful tool because it provides a lot of data that can be conveniently exported for further use.

An overview of the most important terms for a keyword analysis can be obtained by clicking on “Word Cloud”. Übersuggest is an effective and helpful keyword tool that every online editor should know.

Keywordtool.io

 Free / Rights

Like the Google Keyword Planner, Keywordtool.io is one of the most popular keyword tools. For Google, YouTube, Bing, Amazon, App Store you can do keyword research and create your own keyword lists. Users without a license receive a limited number of keyword ideas without additional key figures, such as the search volume or the CPC. If you want access to all data, you have to order the paid Keyword Tool Pro license for a whopping $ 88 per month. I find the price too high, which is why I prefer to use the KWFinder, which you can get for a fraction of the license costs.

SEMrush

The software was originally aimed at the US market, has been on the market for many years and is now available for 25+ countries. Semrush’s strengths lie in the SEA area, but the “Keyword Analytics” function is ideal for SEO analysis, not least because Semrush provides tips for organic searches and paid searches.

The Similar Keywords report is useful for keyword analysis. You can check this tool through taking SEMrush free trial. You enter a keyword or a search phrase in the search slot, select the index and click on “Search”. Semrush determines a large amount of relevant data for each keyword suggestion and outputs it clearly using diagrams and tables. Although you can also find similar keywords with an unpaid Semrush account, the data is very limited. That’s why I recommend ordering a pro account for $ 69.95 a month for serious keyword research.

Another way to find keywords is the “Matching phrase” report, which can also generate interesting keyword ideas. This data can also be conveniently exported with Semrush.
